Moving into your first home - What every new homeowner should do

Published on 24 May 2023

Moving into a new home is an exciting milestone but it can also be an overwhelming experience and, after the stress of the moving process, it's tempting to kick back and relax. However, there are several important tasks that new homeowners should prioritise in order to ensure a smooth transition into their new space.

Here are some of the first things new homeowners should do when they move into their home both for practical reasons and also to help you and your family settle in more quickly:

  • First and foremost, change the locks. This is a crucial step to ensure the security of your new home. You never know who may have a spare key or access to the property, so hiring a locksmith or changing the locks yourself should be a top priority.

  • Next, familiarise yourself with the home's utilities. Locate the main water shut-off valve, circuit breaker box, and gas shut-off valve, if applicable. Knowing how to control these essential systems will be helpful in case of emergencies or maintenance needs.

  • It's also important to inspect the property for any immediate maintenance or repairs. Check for leaks, loose wires, or malfunctioning appliances. Address any safety hazards or urgent repairs promptly to prevent further damage or accidents.

  • Take the time to thoroughly clean your new home. Even if the previous owners cleaned before they left, it's a good idea to give the space a deep clean before you start unpacking. This includes wiping down surfaces, vacuuming or mopping floors, and cleaning bathrooms and kitchen appliances. If you don't have time to do this yourself, consider hiring a professional cleaning service.

  • Once the essentials are taken care of, start organising and unpacking room by room. Unpack the essentials first, such as bedding, kitchenware, and toiletries. Set up your basic living areas and gradually unpack the remaining boxes. Take your time and create a system that works for you, focusing on one area at a time.

  • While unpacking, take inventory of your belongings and consider updating or purchasing insurance coverage to protect your investment. Homeowner's insurance is essential for safeguarding your property and belongings against potential risks or unforeseen events. Research different insurance providers, compare coverage options, and choose a policy that suits your needs.

  • If you haven’t already done so, update your address and contact information with relevant parties. Notify your employer, banks, credit card companies, and other important institutions of your new address. Additionally, forward your mail from your old residence to ensure you receive important correspondence without interruption.

  • Establish Daily Routines: Establishing daily routines early on can help your family settle into a new rhythm. Set meal times, create a consistent bedtime routine, and establish designated spaces for work, study, and leisure activities. This will provide structure and a sense of stability for everyone in the family.

  • Familiarise Yourself with the neighbourhood. Take some time to explore your new neighbourhood and get familiar with nearby amenities such as grocery stores, schools, healthcare facilities, and recreational areas. This will help you feel more connected to your community and make settling in easier.

Not everything needs to be done immediately, however, and some non-essential tasks projects can be tackled in time:

  • Cosmetic upgrades like painting or remodelling can be postponed until you've settled into your new home. Take your time to plan and budget for these projects properly to ensure they align with your long-term goals.

  • Landscaping and outdoor improvements can also be deferred if they're not urgent. Focus on basic maintenance, such as mowing the lawn, trimming hedges, and clearing debris. Plan future landscaping projects according to the season and budget accordingly.

  • Find local services and providers: Research and locate local services and providers that your family may need, such as doctors, dentists, veterinarians, and schools. Having this information readily available will make it easier to access services when needed.

  • Meet the neighbours: Take the initiative to introduce yourself to your new neighbours. Building connections within the community can foster a sense of belonging and create a support network. It can also provide valuable insights into the neighbourhood and local activities and it’s a good idea from a safety and security perspective.

By following these steps, new homeowners can help their families settle into their new home more quickly and easily. Prioritise comfort, security, and familiarity, and remember that it's a process that takes time. Embrace the excitement of this new chapter and create a warm and welcoming environment for your family.

Remember, becoming a homeowner is a journey, and it's important to balance immediate needs with long-term goals. By prioritising essential tasks and gradually working on non-urgent projects, you can settle into your new home smoothly and enjoy the benefits of homeownership.
