Why Community Matters – It’s about So Much More Than Property

Published on 31 Jul 2026

Real estate is about far more than buying and selling homes. It's about people, neighbourhoods, relationships and creating places where communities can thrive. That is why Lew Geffen Sotheby's International Realty franchises across South Africa actively support the towns and suburbs they serve, not simply as businesses, but as invested members of their local communities.

That commitment was once again on display when the Lew Geffen Sotheby's International Realty Ballito team participated in the 2026 Ballito Neighbourhood Watch (BNW) Annual Potjie Competition, where they proudly secured second place among 67 competing teams.

While bringing home a certificate was certainly a highlight, the day represented something much more meaningful: supporting a community initiative that helps make Ballito an even safer and better place to live.

This commitment is clearly evident by the fact that Lew Geffen Sotheby's International Realty Ballito has been supporting the event for many years – and last year they secured second place for Gees.

A celebration of community spirit

Held on Saturday, 25 July at Townsend Park, the BNW Annual Potjie Competition has grown into one of the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast's most anticipated winter events.

This year's competition was the biggest yet, attracting 67 teams made up of local businesses, community organisations and neighbourhood groups. Teams competed for titles including Best Potjie, Best Gees and Best Dressed Stand, while hundreds of visitors enjoyed a day filled with entertainment, delicious food and family-friendly activities.

Guests sampled traditional potjie meals, enjoyed live music, explored local food stalls and craft beverage vendors, and watched the ever-popular Chilli Challenge. Families were kept entertained with jumping castles, zorb balls, cupcake decorating, face painting and reptile encounters, creating an atmosphere that reflected everything people love about the Ballito lifestyle.

For Lew Geffen Sotheby's International Realty Ballito, participating in an event like this is a natural extension of the company's values – and it’s one of the aspects we most enjoy.

More than a fundraising event

Although the potjies, entertainment and festivities are what attract visitors, the BNW Potjie Competition has a very serious purpose.

The annual event raises funds for Ballito Neighbourhood Watch, whose volunteers work tirelessly throughout the year to improve safety across the community.

Funds raised during the competition help support several important initiatives, including:

  • Maintaining and expanding the area's Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera network.
  • Ongoing camera maintenance and software licensing.
  • Installing additional overview surveillance cameras.
  • Painting residential house numbers to help emergency services locate properties more quickly during emergencies.

These initiatives benefit everyone living and working in Ballito.

Effective neighbourhood security contributes to resident confidence, supports local businesses and helps preserve the appeal of the area as a sought-after place to live and invest.

Supporting the communities we call home

Every Lew Geffen Sotheby's International Realty franchise operates independently, but they all share one important belief: strong communities create stronger property markets.

People don't simply purchase a house; they invest in a neighbourhood. They want to know that their community is welcoming, safe and vibrant. They value local events, active residents, well-maintained public spaces and organisations working to improve the quality of life for everyone.

This is why so many Lew Geffen Sotheby's International Realty offices across South Africa regularly support local charities, schools, sporting events, conservation projects and neighbourhood initiatives.

The Ballito office's involvement in the BNW Potjie Competition reflects that ongoing commitment.

Rather than simply sponsoring from the sidelines, the team rolled up their sleeves, embraced the friendly competition and spent the day engaging with residents, fellow businesses and community organisations that collectively help make Ballito one of South Africa's most desirable coastal destinations.

Why community involvement matters in real estate

Real estate professionals spend every day talking about neighbourhoods. They know which schools families are best, which parks children love, where residents gather for coffee and how local amenities influence property values. Few businesses become as closely connected to a community as a local real estate office.

That connection creates both an opportunity and a responsibility.

Supporting community events allows estate agents to contribute in meaningful ways beyond property transactions. Whether it's fundraising for safety initiatives, supporting local festivals or participating in charity events, these activities strengthen relationships and help build the kind of neighbourhoods that people are proud to call home.

For buyers relocating to Ballito, events like the BNW Potjie Competition offer a glimpse into the area's unique character. They demonstrate that Ballito is more than beautiful beaches and excellent homes – it’s a community where residents, businesses and organisations come together to support one another.

Ballito's thriving community lifestyle

The BNW Potjie Competition has become a signature event on Ballito's annual calendar and forms part of the North Coast's busy winter events season, following the internationally recognised Ballito Pro festival.

Its continued growth reflects the strong sense of community that has helped transform Ballito from a holiday destination into one of South Africa's fastest-growing residential property markets.

New families continue to relocate to the area in search of a coastal lifestyle, quality schools, modern amenities and a welcoming community atmosphere.

Events like this reinforce those qualities by bringing together residents of all ages while raising funds that directly benefit the broader community.

A shared success

Securing second place among 67 talented teams was a wonderful achievement for the Lew Geffen Sotheby's International Realty Ballito team, but the real success was being part of an event that celebrated community while making a tangible difference.

The day demonstrated that local businesses have an important role to play in supporting the places where they operate. For Lew Geffen Sotheby's International Realty, community involvement isn't simply about brand visibility, it's about contributing to neighbourhoods that people are proud to live in.

Whether helping to improve community safety, supporting local initiatives or participating in events that bring residents together, the company's franchises understand that thriving communities benefit everyone.

After all, great real estate isn't only measured by beautiful homes or desirable locations. It's also measured by the people who invest their time, energy and passion into making those places feel like home.
